The Last Duel

Read about the story where judgement is based on one’s word not on evidence.

The last duel is a 2021 historical movie starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver Jodie Comer and Ben Affleck which was released on the 10th September 2021. The movie is based on the 2004 book of the same name by Eric Jager.

The story takes place in the medieval France. Jean de Carrouges and Jacques le Gris were friends until Carrouges claimed that le Gris had raped his wife Marguerite de Carrouges. Due to the lack of evidence to prove that le Gris had actually raped lady Carrouges, Jean de Carrouges challenge Jacques le Gris into a trial by combat. Trial by combat is where two opponents fight until one is dead and winning party would be stated as the innocent while the losing party as guilty.

The movie starts with both Carrouges and le Gris getting ready for the fight while noble and the king watching. The story is said in three different perspectives. Firstly Carrouges’ secondly le Gris’ and thirdly Marguerite’s.

The same scenes are shown three times during the movie but according to the respective person the climate of the scene changes. How each person acts and reacts in the same situation change according to the perspective of the person. That is why I loved the movie. How each person thinks of the same situation that describe themselves as the victim or the innocent is brilliantly portrayed by the actors.

If you haven’t watched it I believe it would be a good weekend movie for you to watch and enjoy.
