World Population and Beyond

This is 2021 and we live in a middle of a global pandemic that had caused over three million deaths within a year and a half. Right now the global death rate is 7.645 and the birth rate is 17.873 with the life expectancy of 72.81. These are the values without the impact of pandemic. Currently our world has 7.9 billion people living. But when did world reach 1 billion? What is the current population?

World Population Growth

There isn’t any key evidence to confirm when was the global population reached 1 billion but scientists and historians have predicted that in 1804 world may have passed the 1 billion milestone. Since then the world population have reached 7.9 billion and let’s see when did each billion added to the count. Following table and graft show the year and the population.

As you can see the duration to reach the next billion had become smaller and smaller as the time went on. Scientists predict that the world population will surpass 9 billion in 2023.

The Top 10 Countries With Most Population

  1. China – 1,444,219,297
  2. India – 1,392,078,615
  3. USA – 332,718,187
  4. Indonesia – 276,100,904
  5. Pakistan – 224,773,618
  6. Brazil – 213,897,756
  7. Nigeria – 210,807,094
  8. Bangladesh – 166,149,882
  9. Russia – 145,989,254
  10. Mexico – 130,139,687

The values are according to 2021 May. The population within these 10 countries are more than 3.4 billion. Other 4.397 billion people are divided among 185 countries. You can see how the number of world population varies here. These countries may have the largest populations in the world but they do not have the highest population density. Population density is the number of people in a unit area. The countries mentioned above have highest value of population but the country is large and capable of having such a population. The population of a country does not affect the living. But the population density does. Because you see that 1000 people can live comfortable in 10km2 but if they were asked to live in 1km2 they would be uncomfortable.

The Top 10 Countries With Highest Population Density.

  1. Monaco – 26,337
  2. Macau – 21,645
  3. Singapore – 8,358
  4. Hong Kong – 7,140
  5. Gibraltar – 3,369
  6. Bahrain – 2,239
  7. Vatican City – 2,003
  8. Maldives – 1,802
  9. Malta – 1,380
  10. Bangladesh – 1,265

Overpopulation

Overpopulation is when population exceeds the sustainable size in a particular environment or habitat. Overpopulation caused due to increased birth rate, decreased death rate, immigration and the sudden decline in available resources

Human Overpopulation

Human overpopulation refers to a human population that is too large to be sustained by its environment in the long term. Though the idea of human overpopulation is discussed with the world population, mainly the regions are concerned. Because even within a country there are regions with high population density and lower population density. Usually the cities are packed while rural and remote areas are not.

What Causes the Over Population?

With the development of the civilizations and fields within it such as agriculture and science people had access to food, medicine. Specially after the industrial revolution the production of food was increased due to machinery and new fertilizers and other easy tools and methods of farming. With the development of machinery the life style of a men and women were changed. And over the time the mortality rate was decreased. Which naturally causes to increase the population. Also because of the easy access to good food and medicine the life expectancy and fertility rate were increased.

The rapid increase in human population over the last few decades have created questions and many people are concerned that with the increasing population the world may not be able to sustain the future or even present number of its inhabitants.

The Side Effects of Human Overpopulation

Overpopulation is not actually good. Not only the human overpopulation but also of the other species. But the population of almost all other species are controlled by nature. It is the population of the humans that actually we need to consider when talking about overpopulation.

There is a great impact on the environment because more people means more waste and pollution. The increase of human population means that there is a increase in CO2 levels. In 2019 there were 43.0Gt CO2 were released into atmosphere due to human activities. Because of the pandemic we could see the changes in the environment due to the lack of human activities, even for a short period of time. A huge amount of CO2 is released just by breathing. A human ling releases about 200 ml of CO2 within a minute. That means a single human releases 105,120 liters of CO2 within a day. And CO2 is a green house gas which causes global warming. Which means us humans contribute to global warming just by breathing let alone other activities.

Human activities release 60 or more times the amount of CO2 released by volcanoes each year.

The overpopulation means over consumption. Overpopulation is not determined by the population or population density. It is determined by the available sustainable resources. According to Paul R. Ehrlich the over population depends on how resources are managed and distributed throughout the population. The overpopulation can ride into poverty. As the resources are limited people will not be able to have access to the resources as they once did. Which cause the monetary value of the resource to increase and cause poverty. Which means that overpopulation has an effect on economy as well.

Solutions for the Overpopulation

China has the highest population at the moment. Which is 1,444,176,010 (1.44 billion) and 18.47% of the total population. The population density in China is 153 per Km2 (397 people per mi2). If this could continue China would be in a dangerous state. Therefore Chinese government has established few rules in order to maintain the Chinese population.

In 1979 China had introduced a new rule as only one child can be born in a family. The one-child policy required married couples to go through a complex process to apply for a family planning service certificate once they learned of a pregnancy. Once the couple had been granted the right to have a child, they then had a duty to use contraception to prevent further pregnancies. But in 2016 China had changed the policy and now a married couple can have two children.

But above changes have done nothing to the fertility rate in the country. But that is just China’s solution. But overpopulation is a global problem. But we can’t kill the off springs just because of the population is growing. The best thing is to prevent the pregnancy. The best solution is to educate people about their sexual health, despite age, gender, social status or civil status. Because people do not need to be married to reproduce and every married couple has dream of having their own babies. But all of us have a responsibility when it comes to overpopulation. The easiest way is to educate children.

Over population is a serious matter because not all the necessary resources are sustainable. If we were unable to find a solution we can fail as a civilization. Just because we lack enough resources to sustain life. And that will be the end of human race.
