February 2nd – World Wetlands Day

Wetland is a distinct ecosystem flooded by water permanently or seasonally such as marshes, ponds, edge of a lake or low areas that are frequently flooded. In 1971 few environmentalists gathered to reaffirm the protection of wetlands but until 1991 it was not celebrated officially.

February 4th – World Cancer Day

In order to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage prevention, detection and treatment world cancer day is marked. Its primary goal is to reduce the number of deaths due to cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally marking 9.6 million deaths in 2018. The day is established in year 2000 at the world cancer summit held in Paris, France

February 6th – International Day of Zero Tolerance of Female Genital Mutilation

It is a UN sponsored annual awareness day to eradicate female genital mutilation. Female genital mutilation or female circumcision is a ritual of cutting or removing the outer parts of female genitalia. UNICEF have estimated in 2016 that about 200 million females are living in the world who have undergone the procedure.

February 9th – Safer Internet Day

The safer internet day is celebrated to join all the stakeholders to make the internet a safer place to all. It started in 2004 and raises awareness about issues such as cyber bullying.

February 11th – International Day of Women and Girls of Science

The day is celebrated to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for girls and women. The day was celebrated since 2015 and the day is a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science. Despite the fact 45% students at the bachelor’s degree and 55% at the master’s degree are women, only 33% are among the researchers. But 70% of health and social care workers are women who are paid 11% less than their male counterparts

February 13th – World Radio Day

Radio is a great medium of information. It has its own charms so following a request from the Spanish Radio Academy in 2010 the UN declared the February 13th as the world radio day to celebrate the culture in radio. In 2012 the first Radio Day was celebrated and in each year different themes were discussed such as youth, Gender equality, Radios in Emergencies. 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the world radio day and celebrate a hundred years long tradition in radio.

February 14th – World Valentine Day

The day was originated as a minor christian feast day to honor Saint Valentine. Throughout the years the day has developed into not only a religiously but also a culturally important day in celebration of love. Today it is celebrated worldwide

February 20th – World Day of Social Justice

In order to raise awareness of social justice this day is celebrated which includes poverty, unemployment, gender equality, human rights and social protection. first celebrated in 2009 the declaration focuses on guaranteeing fair outcomes for all through employment and social protection.

February 21st – International Mother Language Day

The day is celebrated to promote the importance of linguistics and cultural diversity. It was first announced in 1999 and since 2002 the day had been formally recognized by the UN. In 2007 UN general assembly 2008 was named as the international year of languages. Parallel to the international mother language day many events were organized around the world such as Linguapax price in Barcelona, Spain, Ekushey Awards in Bangladesh, mother language film festival in Washington DC, USA.

February 28th – Rare Disease Day

Rare Disease day is an observant held by European Organization for Rare Diseases in the last day of February. It is celebrated to raise awareness of rare diseases and to promote access to the treatments. Established in 2008 with few European countries in 2014, 84 countries participated the event. The main discussion is equal access to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.
