2020 December

2020 was one of the disappointed years in recent history. Despite the fact that most of the global population was inside for a very long period, events occurred without hesitation. Thank you for reading my blog through out the year. Let’s end 2020 with events in December.

The Arecibo telescope collapsed at the beginning of the month, few weeks after the announcement of its demolition.

Pfizer and BioNTech announced an emergengy use of their vaccine against COVID 19 to the European Medicines Agency and United Kingdom approved their vaccine BNT162b2 also named as Tozinameran becoming the first country to begin a mass inoculation of clinically authorized fully tested vaccine. After that Saudi Arabia also approved the vaccine for emergency use. At the end of the month United Kingdom also approved the second vaccine available which is more easier to distribute and store as it requires the normal fridge temperature. The vaccine was developed by AstaZeneca.

Russia also began mass vaccination of their own vaccine against COVID 19 Sputnik V. By the 10th of December Argentina approved the vaccine for emergency use.

At the beginning of the month the number of confirmed cases of COVID 19 was 65 million and at the end of the month it passed 80 million worldwide. The death toll rose up to 1.5 million.

United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs voted to remove Cannabis from the list of dangerous drugs after recognizing its medical value. But there will be some limitations too.

The European Union agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 55% over next decade.

A total solar eclipse took place on the 14th of December. It was visible to the parts of South Pacific Ocean, South Atlantic Ocean and southern South America.

A great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter occurred on 21st of December. It was the closest conjunction between the two planets since 1623.

An earthquake in Croatia killed 7 people. Its magnitude was recorded as 6.4 .

United State announced its withdrawal from the Somali civil war and removed Sudan from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism. Also US placed sanctions against Turkey in response of their purchase of S-400 missile system.

International Criminal Court accused Philippines of crimes against humanity in its war on drugs.

On the 31st of December Adobe Flash Player was released for the last time. Now the software had been added to the discontinued list. Its download page was disappeared on January 2nd 2021.
