I hope that you have read my previous posts on the events occurred in each month. So let’s see what are the incidents happened in August 2020.
On the 5th the world death toll due to COVID 19 exceeded 700,000 and on the 22nd the number exceeded 800,000. The number of confirmed cases were reported as 20 million on the 10th of August and by the 30th 25 million.
Russian president Vladimir Putin announced that Russia had approved the world’s first COVID vaccine
Explosions in Beirut, Lebanon killed more than 220 people and injured thousands while damaging the port in Beirut. The explosions were occurred due to ammonium nitrate which was stored unsafely. Estimated damage was 10-15 billion Dollars.
Air India Express flight crashed after overrunning the runway at Calicut international airport in Kerala, India. 19 people were killed in the crash.
Japanese bulk carrier Wakashio was broken in half and aproximately 1000 tons of oil was spilled into the ocean. The ship was stranded on a reef in Mauritius. It was considered the largest environment disaster in history of Mauritius.
A mutiny in a military base in Mali developed into a Coup d’état (takeover). The president and the prime minister among other senior government and military officers were arrested and later president announced his resignation on national television.
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe announced his resignation due to ill health.
Africa was declared free of wild polio. It is the second virus eradicated from the continent since the smallpox which was about 40 years ago.
Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of the Amazon became the first person in history to have a net worth exceeding 200 billion US dollars.
